Go green with your pet

Today there are many brands of pet product in the market from ‘natural’ to ‘bio-degradable litter, to ‘organic’ toys and ‘whole food’ pet treats, so it’s up to the consumer to make the decisions on the products they want to buy. Even pet food, with its ingredients, additives, processing, and packaging, can make any environmentally-conscious pet owner’s mind boggle.

Here are some helpful tips and simple ways to make your home and your pet’s environmental a little greener.

VENTILATE
The easiest and cheapest way to improve the air inside your home is to let good air in – open windows and let clean air in. Fresh air can dilute pollutants and helps keep mould at bay.

GO NATURAL
Choose natural and untreated material for flooring such natural wool carpeting wherever you can. Hemp, cotton, linen and wool fabrics don’t contain the toxic substances that manmade fibres do.

SMELL CLEAN
Forget those artificial supermarket air fresheners. Fresh flowers and herbs are the hippest ways to naturally scent your home. Baking soda, with a few sprigs of fresh peppermint makes for a quick household cleaner. A splattering of lavender flowers in the bathroom will also release a pleasant smell to counteract the unpleasant ones.

BASIC STUFF
Chemical cleaners are advertised on TV as being a quick cleaning solution – just one wipe! Reading the ingredient list itself requires a biochemical degree. There are simpler cleaning solutions that use many of the products you already have in your refrigerator and its actually easier to make than you think. Open dishes of white vinegar or a generous sprinkling of baking soda absorbs odors.

FLEA FREE
Many of the flea prevention products on the market efficiently to rid your furry friend of fleas. However, not everyone wants to douse their pets in chemicals, so there are some natural alternatives and remedies that can stop an infestation between treatments. Brush and comb your dog and cat regularly; a flea comb works by catching the fleas and eggs in its teeth. A very important part of controlling fleas is making sure that your pet’s bedding is washed every couple of days in a hot-wash cycle. Even a weekly practice of washing pet bedding will help reduce the flea cycle. Vacuum high pet traffic areas – carpets and furniture – every few days and make sure you empty the vacuum bag outside after every vacuuming session.

RECYCLE TOYS
There are very few toys on the market that are non-toxic. Cheaper, plastic ones found on the shelves of your supermarket have high levels of toxic materials and should be avoided. You only need to sniff them to smell the plastic fumes. Look for toys made from safe materials or choose ones that are safe to the planet and recyclable. Making your own toys from things you already have in your house is both cheap and fun. Make use of old socks by turning them into sock monsters. Recycle old pet bottles by stomping them flat and then stuffing them into a long sports sock. These make fun, crunchy toys that cat loves. Old t-shirts can be cut into multiple strips and then plated into great tug o’rope toys.

BITTER LITTER
Green kitty litter products are not as plentiful here as they are in the US. Try to steer clear of clay-based cat litters. They cannot be broken down and they contain silica, a known carcinogen. There are several other alternatives in the market, which may have been processed , but are at least biodegradable.
